Anolamine Series > Ethylene Glycol
Molecular Formula: C2H6O2
Molecular Weight: 62.07 g/mol
CAS Number: 107-21-1
Physical Properties:
● Appearance: Colorless, odorless, viscous liquid
● Density: 1.113 g/cm³ (20°C)
● Boiling Point: 197-198°C
● Melting Point: -12.9°C
● Flash Point: 111°C
Chemical Properties: Ethylene glycol has low volatility, high flash point, and greater hygroscopicity than glycerol. It is slightly soluble in ether and miscible with water in any proportion, significantly lowering the freezing point of water. It turns yellow or brown in the presence of iron impurities.
Applications
Ethylene glycol (MEG) is an important chemical raw material, primarily used in the production of polyester resin products, including polyester fibers, films, and PET bottles. Ethylene glycol solutions can be used as automotive antifreeze, with a 58% (by mass) solution having a freezing point of -48°C. Higher or lower concentrations result in a higher freezing point. It is also used as an auxiliary in the dye industry, and as a lubricant in tobacco and cosmetics.
Packaging and Storage:
● Packaging: Tank trucks, steel drums (200 L/drum), ISO tanks, IBC containers, etc.
● Storage: Store separately from strong oxidizers, strong bases, and strong acids. Keep dry. Ventilate along the ground.
